The American Civil War: A Pivotal Conflict in U.S. History

Introduction:

The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was a pivotal event in U.S. history. From 1861 to 1865, the Union (northern states) battled the Confederacy (southern states) over issues including slavery, states' rights, and economic differences.

Causes of the War:

The war had been brewing for decades due to growing tensions between the North and South. Abolitionist movements in the North called for the end of slavery, while the South's economy relied heavily on it. Additionally, disputes over westward expansion and states' rights fueled the conflict.

Events of the War:

The war began on April 12, 1861, at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Over the next four years, bloody battles raged across the country, including Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Antietam. The Union eventually gained the upper hand, and the Confederacy surrendered on May 26, 1865, at Appomattox Court House.

Consequences of the War:

The American Civil War remains the deadliest conflict in U.S. history, with an estimated 620,000 casualties. It led to the abolition of slavery, the preservation of the Union, and a period of reconstruction and healing. However, the legacy of the war and its impact on race relations continue to shape American society today.
