Real Madrid and Bayern Aim For Last Four
Bayern Munich Were Left Aggrieved
Real Madrid Reached The Last Four Thanks To Cristiano Ronaldo's Hat-Trick
Bayern Munich were left aggrieved by some awful officiating as Real Madrid reached the last four thanks to Cristiano Ronaldos hat-trick.
The German champions were the better side for long periods of the match, but they were undone by three moments of brilliance from Ronaldo.
The Portuguese superstar scored twice in the space of five minutes late in the game to give Real a 3-2 lead on the night, and he then completed his hat-trick in extra time to seal a 6-3 aggregate victory.
Bayern were particularly unhappy with the decision to award Real a penalty in the 83rd minute, which Ronaldo converted to make it 2-2.
The referee adjudged that Joshua Kimmich had fouled Lucas Vazquez, but replays showed that the Bayern defender had made no contact with the Real winger.
Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes was furious with the decision, and he said that it had cost his team the game.
"The penalty was a scandal," Heynckes said.
"It was a clear dive from Vazquez, and the referee fell for it. That decision changed the whole game."
Despite their disappointment, Bayern can be proud of their performance over the two legs of the tie.
They were the better team for long periods, and they created a number of good chances.
However, they were ultimately undone by Ronaldo's brilliance.
The Portuguese superstar is in the form of his life, and he is capable of winning matches on his own.
Bayern will now have to focus on the Bundesliga, where they are chasing a sixth consecutive title.
They will also be hoping to win the DFB-Pokal, which would give them a domestic double.
